SALVATION ARMY CONTINUES OPERATIONS DURING TRANSITION
Christian charity serves needy people as it waits for future home to be move-in ready
Columbia, S.C., February 25, 2010—Operations continue at The Salvation Army in Columbia…just not at the non-profit’s former 2025 Main Street location. The Salvation Army has sold that property and is currently helping people with emergency basic human needs services at several sites around town as the organization waits for its future home, the former Easter Seals building at 3020 Farrow Road, to be renovated.
“Our programs are housed in various temporary locations for the time being,” said Major Richard L. Jones, Area Coordinator at The Salvation Army in Columbia. “However, The Salvation Army is alive and well in this community.”
One of The Salvation Army’s most visible programs is feeding the homeless, so the organization is extremely thankful for a local church that has opened its doors for meals to continue to be served to the hungry. The Salvation Army has an arrangement with Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 1301 Richland Street, to use its kitchen and dining facilities beginning February 15, 2010 through March 31, 2010. Meals service begins at 5:00 PM and ends at 5:50 PM.
Another important program that The Salvation Army provides is case management to people in need of emergency assistance. Clients may meet with Salvation Army case workers Monday through Friday at The Salvation Army Social Services Office, located in the lower level of the Liberty House at 2001 Assembly Street. Sign ups for clothing and furniture vouchers will be from 10 AM to 12 PM beginning on Monday, February 22. No appointment is necessary. In order to receive a furniture voucher, a client must currently have a place to live but be able to prove that he or she was previously homeless for a period of six months to one year. A client may also be eligible for a furniture voucher if he or she has experienced a house fire. An American Red Cross referral is required to verify that a house fire has occurred.
Salvation Army case workers will meet with clients by appointment for rent, utility, water assistance and prescription medication at the Liberty House, located at 2001 Assembly Street. Walk-ins will not be accepted. These services will be by appointment only. Appointments can be made and information on services can be shared by calling 803-765-0260, extension 102.
The worship experience is vital to the mission of The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army Corps (Church) will hold its services at the Lutheran Theological Seminary, 4201 North Main Street, beginning February 21 through April 11. Meetings will be inside the Christ Chapel at 9:00 AM on Sunday mornings, 6:30 PM on Sunday evenings and 6:30 PM on Wednesday evenings.
The Salvation Army’s administrative staff is located at the Liberty House, 2001 Assembly Street, Suite 204. Office hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
